Fiat Lux Scholars Program

The Fiat Lux Scholars Program is/was designed to assist transitioning students from high school who are 1st Generation College Students. The majority of the 1st Generation College Students are the first to attend college. The program provides a variety of resources to help students ease into a college environment.

I am a 1st Generation College Student and have been in the program for four years (my entire academic journey at UC Merced). I have also worked for the program for three years. The following are my positions in the program and some of my duties. Attached to each position are some examples of my work:

Community Scholar (2013-2014)

  • Assisted Residential Assistants (RAs) with programming such as workshops and social events.
  • Led weekly Community Scholar Meetings by creating an agenda and taking meeting minutes
  • Piloted the Fiat Lux Newsletter, “Into the Light”
  • Held office hours for upwards to four hours a week, meeting as many as five to ten students

Lead Scholar (2014-2015)

  • Formulated and hosted workshops, such as those pertaining to time management and study habits, and social events such as a BBQ at the lake and a Carnival
  • Hosted office hours upwards to four to six hours a week with a caseload of sixty-five (65) scholars
  • Provided academic, personal, and career consultation to scholars on an individual and group basis

Student Coordinator (2015-2016)

  • Serve as a liaison between student and professional staff members
  • Provide general supervision and guidance to as many as twenty (20) student staff members
  • Coordinate program calendars for programming events and study sessions by booking space/rooms
  • Coordinate student staff training along with team meetings for sixteen (16) to twenty-one (21) individuals
  • Compile and analyze data from program and course evaluations such as attendance and budgeting sheets using Microsoft Office tools
